Вася-Василёчек

Ainur has already been swooning over this clip - it's an excerpt from the music film "Концерт - фронту" from 1942. Apparently you can still get it on DVD in Russia (together with another film from the same era). In this song, Vasya complains that his girl hasn't written any letters to him, and the others try to cheer him up.

The main reason for why I post it here is that this guy, whom the camera focuses on once in a while during the choir bits, is almost too cute to be true:

Sigh. Yes, he's VERY cute. I have a weakness for Russian guys ... maybe it's strange for an American girl, but I'm inclined to not care!

Poor Vasya! (Funny, he looks old enough to worry about his wife and daughters instead...)

I guess attraction is often kindled by the mixture of something exotic and something familiar. America is a great mixture of different ethnicities, like Russia. It's easy to find someone with an appealing mixture of exotic and familiar characteristics. (Insert complaint about the limitations of the Fenno-Scandinavian gene pool here.) It's like looking at Russian fairytale illustrations by Bilibin - the birches and pines are the same as in Scandinavia, but there are golden cupolas like onions at the horizon. And the rivers and steppes and forests are so wide...

There's also something else about Russians, not just actors but also ordinary people. They have some special facial expressions and movements. They can be dramatic, but they can also be very minimalist. It's a question of timing, I suppose... I've never been to Russia myself, but it's fun to watch people in Helsinki or Tallinn or Berlin and play "guess the nationality". Russian men are pretty easy to recognise, even from behind!

Okh...I have to watch that about fifty more times!:)

It's an excellent point, Ainur! A "mixture of something exotic and something familiar." I had never realized it, but I think it's true. Too familiar can be boring, too exotic, maybe scary. Interesting!
