Some of my favourite screenshots from Sergei Eisenstein's
Alexander Nevsky. Ahistorically, but politically correctly in Stalin's days, Nevsky refuses an alliance with the Golden Horde in the movie. In reality,
Alexander Nevsky ensured peaceful relations with the Mongols by enforcing tribute from the principalities to the Golden Horde and uniting the Russian principalities against Western invasions. He became the Grand Prince of Vladimir thanks to his friendship with
Sartaq Khan. This connection inspired the controversial school of Russian historical philosophy known as
"Eurasianism".
Does "Altyn Orda" means "golden army"?If yes, I'll be surprised..actually not.
ReplyDeleteAltyn means "golden", and orda is "horde", which comes from the Mongolian word for "royal residence or camp", which later came to mean "any military encampment, army". (See here.)
ReplyDeleteIn the case of the Golden Horde it was the name of the Khanate (one of the four Khanates into which the Mongol Empire was divided after Genghis Khan's death).
Do you know why I asked you this question Tinet? Because, in Turkish it is "Altın Ordu". Strange ha ?!
ReplyDeleteWell, It's not really strange, since the languages have a lot of common vocabulary. :o)
